Ringwood Hall

It's probably not a very intelligent way of trying to loosen up but I do enjoy working with pen so I thought I'd try a fairly quick sketchy painting and try not to be too fussy over straight lines and precise detail. I feel I was partly succesful but don't particularly like the end result. I would have been very happy if it was just a little more like the work of David Webster (http://www.david-webster.co.uk/) whose work I really like, though I do accept I'll never be in his league. LOL. Still, regardless of the end result, I really enjoyed doing this, and that's what it's all about, right?

  1. Just have to say...I really enjoyed your "quick, sketchy painting"! I really like the colors and shadows. It doesn't look rushed - it has a nice feel to it! I think you did a nice job with it.

  2. I really like this. Drawings where a ruler hasn't been used are far more interesting and have more character. This one is such a nice drawing. I like the ivy, the birds and the windows and the fact that you have just indicated bricks here and there.

  3. Samantha, I'm glad it doesn't come across as rushed. Thanks very much.

Sandra, I enjoy wobbly lines in other people's work just not my own - LOL. Thanks for the nice comment.

  4. The pen works very well here John, and has brought much more detail into your painting. I've found that too much pen however, can make watercolours lose the feeling of spontaniety.

  5. You're not wrong Frank. I recently saw a drawing that was very heavily penned but the watercolour was no more than a very subtle hint. It worked very well and goes to show that the balance between the two is very important.
