Surfing
When on holiday last week I took a sequence of photo's of a guy 'riding a wave' on his surf board. Looking through my photo's a short while ago, I was looking at the spray being thrown up from the top of the breaking wave by the wind. I couldn't help but wonder how you'd go about drawing something like that, as you do ... so I just had to have a go. This is only a small sketch (6" x 4") but it served the purpose.

Well we get plenty of surfing and waves like that here, John, and I can say that is spot-on!
ReplyDeleteFabulous drawing John - I presume it's graphite?. You've captured the feeling of the moment beautifully.
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith, that's good to know.
ReplyDeleteMichael, yes it's graphite - I should have mentioned that. I've decided to do a larger version now. Thank you. ;-)
This is where the putty rubber becomes such a fabulous tool! It's a great drawing John. I particularly like the surface texture that you have added to the water beneath and in front of the wave. Very effective. Have you ever thought of trying something like this in oils or acrylic? :0)
ReplyDeleteI've tried to paint waves a few times...hard thing to do! You have the shadowing down well. Can't wait to see the painted version!
ReplyDeleteAnd Blu-tac Sandra. It's brilliant at lifting graphite. To answer your question about oils or acrylics ... Nope!! My painting skills just aren't up to it me thinks. Thanks for the nice comment. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Samantha.
Very good drawing. Looking forward to the larger version - how big will you make it?
ReplyDeleteThank you Pat. Haven't decided yet on the size. I do fancy trying something A3 but this may not be the right subject for that. I'm also undecided on the composition .... lots of sea and small surfer or a closer view of the surfer. Can't decide which would be most dramatic. A couple more sketches needed first then, I think. LOL.
ReplyDeleteHi John, finally able to comment on this piece,, it's excellent, the movement of the water and the waves, I think thats the better part of the drawing.. rather than the surfer.. BJ
