Cotswold Chimney

As I explained in my last post, a couple of years ago I saw this chimney and it appealed greatly as a watercolour subject. Well, I've finally managed to paint it and it's proven to be an anti-climax. I imagine we're all the same with regards to getting satisfaction from our work - some pieces please us, and others we're not so sure about. For me, this is one of the others. I don't know why it is, but I didn't get an inordinate degree of pleasure from doing this one and I'm not very satisfied with the result. Could it be that the enjoyment of doing a piece has a bearing on how satisfying it is? It is quite remarkable to me that I found more satisfaction  from doing the 20-minute pen sketch, than this 3/4 hour painting. Oh well, 'tis done now ... onward and upward. ;-)

  1. It's a good one John, I still don't know how you get those lines so straight. I happen to like 'low key" paintings, so this one pleases me. ! BJ

  2. I get that feeling from my work too John! I generally get more personal satisfaction from quick sketches than I do from some of my longer, bolder efforts. I think that's par for the course for me anyway:) Nethertheless, this is a lovely painting and you should feel very proud of it. It's skilfully drawn and painted and I love the Cotswold colours and the detail in that chimney especially!

  3. Yes I'm the same John. If I have struggled with a painting, I'm never completely happy with it, even if it looks OK to everyone else. Somehow the painting process seems to be more important than the final result.

  4. I can only really echo what everyone else has said. I like the painting - The colours are perfect and I love the brickwork on the chimney.
My latest painting is far too awful to blog - So I'm hoping to come up with something quick, like a sketch instead. I am sure I will also enjoy it far more that I do my usual laboured attempts :0)

  7. Keith, I know what you mean about paintings we've struggled with. No matter how good the end result is, I'm never happy if it's been an effort.

  8. Thank you very much Sandra. I can't believe you've done an awful painting - yours are always so perfect. Why not be brave and post it anyway and show everyone that it's ok to mess up from time to time. ;-)
