Lime Kiln

I decided to have a go with acrylics. To get the feel of them I wanted a simple picture and chose this view of an old abandoned Lime Kiln that I discovered in Yorkshire last year. I struggled to get a decent wash down for the background hills and found colour mixing difficult, although that applies to everything I do any way. I'm not pleased with the end result but don't know how much of that is down to my using a new medium so I will do this again in watercolour when I can, just to help me better appreciate the differences between the two mediums.

  1. This is great - I like the stone-work which looks very real. I have my own struggle with watercolours! If this is your first time with Acrylics, I think it's amazing!

  2. Thank you Sandra, you're very kind. Some things I found easier and some harder, but I guess you can't find your way round a new medium just on one small painting. Must do more. :-)

  3. Nice stonework John, you've done a good job with your first acrylic. I tried acrylics a year or so back and my first painting was awful, so I put the paints away. Anyway, I did buy some acrylic paper this week so maybe the paints will come out for a second airing soon, but by the looks of your work here, I will be bottom of the class for sure!

  4. Thank you Frank. I was a bit concerned that I'd found it harder than I'd expected but your comment helps me think that maybe I didn't do too bad. I appreciate the feedback and support. I look forward to seeing your next attempt.
